Beacon Church has a rich history, and the White Elephant is very much a part of that history. Beacon officially incorporated as a church in the Spring of 2005. Throughout the subsequent summer, we met in Garden City in a hotel conference room while introducing ourselves to the community and looking for a more permanent home. It was during this time that Beacon's leaders came to know about the East Williston Baptist Church. This church was ideally located exactly in the center of the area that Beacon was hoping to meet for worship. Also, the EWBC was struggling without a pastor or leadership energy. After a short time praying and discussing together, the EWBC decided to give its building to Beacon, and we had our first home!
Beacon's first worship public worship service in East Williston was on December 4, 2005.
Then, in the spring of 2007 Beacon’s pastors heard about the struggling Community Congregational Church of New Hyde Park. CCC had been in decline for many years. Their pastor was hoping to retire and the church was no longer able to sustain itself. CCC was seriously considering closing their doors permanently.
After a few conversations it became clear that CCC and Beacon should consider merging together. This would give Beacon’s congregation room to grow and would allow ministry to continue at the Lakeville Road location in New Hyde Park. Late 2007, Beacon Church and CCC voted to merge together and be called Beacon Church.
As a result of the 2007 merger, the White Elephant Thrift Store became part of the ministries of Beacon, and the Beacon team operated the White Elephant thrift store for many seasons. As our church grew, so did our children. We started a youth group called Fusion and soon we needed space for them to meet. As a result, the White Elephant closed and Fusion expanded into that space in the facility.
While the White Elephant thrift shop is now closed, we have many great memories and are thankful for the opportunity to have served our local community.
